History of do Fontinha

António de Jesus Fontinha José, better known as Fontinha, the former owner of this courtyard, was a man much loved and esteemed by the Piedenses.
Lisbon was a city without water, and although the aqueduct brought half a dozen fountains to the capital, these weren’t enough to provide the conditions for washing clothes. That’s how, in 1880, a real laundry industry was born in Cova da Piedade, more specifically in Romeira. It was the women of Cova da Piedade who washed, rinsed and laid out the clothes, which were then folded and taken back to the people of Lisbon.
With the growth of industry, particularly metalworking and shipbuilding, during the industrial revolution, it was necessary to bring hundreds of workers to Almada, forcing the creation of living conditions for these workers and their families, which resulted in the birth of the workers’ Páteos.

As a tribute to Mr Fontinha, the workers and the washing women of this land, we named each loft after an important Portuguese fountain.
